Revealed its men’s fashion from a catwalk on Malibu Beach
Malibu’s Paradise Cove in Southern California was the chosen venue for Paris-based fashion house Yves Saint Laurent to unveil its spring-summer 2020 men’s collection last week. It used a black beach boardwalk as a runway, right next to the waves, with the show beginning at sunset. Celebrities in attendance included Liam Hemsworth and Keanu Reeves.
The brand’s creative director Anthony Vaccarello chose the narrow strip of beach to stand in for one of his influences, Marrakesh. He also claimed to have been inspired by the Parisian nonchalance of Serge Gainsbourg and Mick Jagger for a bohemian-meets-rocker vibe. “It started after meeting Mick for his upcoming tour,” Vaccarello said of his latest collection before the show. “He showed me his wardrobe, and I was particularly attracted by the details, the colour, the attitude.”
Looking at the images from the event, black has been used extensively throughout the spring-summer 2020 range, with some all-white items and the occasional pops of colour. The rocker side comes through in the slim-fit leather and velvet trousers, skinny ties and marching-band jackets, with cropped vests and pinstripe suits, and even cowboy-style straw hats. This is complemented by a looser, free-flowing silhouette of kimono-style jackets, draped tunics and laid-back luxe, including velvet vests. It was the billowing baggy harem trousers, in a range of fabrics, that caused the biggest surprise, however.
The setting was furnished with fire pits, Persian rugs and blankets, and tiki torches lining the shore. As darkness fell, a light show was projected onto a nearby cliff.
Saint Laurent stores can be found in Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Mall’s Fashion Avenue.
