Richard Mille has a way of making you feel something about a watch. The RM 55-01 Manual Winding is no different – except this time, the feeling comes from what isn’t there.
The number you need to know is 5 grams. That’s the weight of the entire Calibre RMUL4 movement inside this thing. Five. Grams. The new movement – fully skeletonised, stripped to its bones – sits inside a case that Richard Mille calls “conservative dimensions,” which at 37.95 x 47.33 mm is about as understated as the brand gets. On the wrist it barely registers. Physically or visually, it’s there and then almost isn’t.
The choice to go manual winding isn’t a corner being cut – it’s the whole idea. Ditch the oscillating weight that drives an automatic movement and suddenly light has nowhere to hide. It flows straight through the movement, through the grade 5 titanium baseplate, past the three titanium bridges finished in Titalyt®, and the whole thing stops looking like a watch and starts looking like a diagram of one. The kind of thing you’d want framed, not worn – except wearing it is actually the point (and it feels very good).
Three versions of the case are available: Carbon TPT®, White Quartz TPT® and Grey Quartz TPT®. Each has that damascene patterning – a layered, almost accidental-looking texture that’s anything but. It’s technical composite material doing something beautiful, which is more unique than it sounds.
Get close and the details get even better. Microblasted, rhodium-plated hands. A four-part flange that somehow makes titanium, carbon fibre and steel feel like they belong together. And the spline screws — tiny, precise, perfectly placed – doing the unglamorous job of holding it all together while looking like they were designed by someone who cared deeply about screws.
The RM 55-01 doesn’t perform for the room. It’s a watch for the person wearing it – something to catch at a certain angle in certain light and feel extremely good about. Restraint, done properly, is its own kind of flex.
