Vacheron Constantin has introduced three new versions of its Traditionnelle Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin, each presented in a 36.5 mm case that feels perfectly tuned to the current shift in watch culture. The decision to scale down one of its most celebrated complications is a statement. Smaller has become smarter, more wearable, and attuned to the way people actually live with their watches.
The lineup includes two models in 18K 5N pink gold and 18K white gold, along with a third, diamond-set white gold edition that brings a dose of restrained glamour. Despite the reduced dimensions, nothing about these watches feels diminished; if anything, the proportions bring the design into sharper focus
The Traditionnelle collection has long been Vacheron Constantin’s bridge between past and present. Its design cues – the stepped case, the fluted caseback, the crisp lugs – belong to a visual language that goes back to 18th-century Geneva. But these elements aren’t simply revived; they’re interpreted with a modern sensibility, treating tradition not as something to be preserved behind glass, but as a living part of the brand’s identity.
The perpetual calendar is one of the Maison’s oldest specialities. Its first example, dating from 1884, sits in its private collection, a reminder of a time when watchmakers tackled celestial irregularities with mechanical ingenuity alone. Today’s model performs the same task – tracking leap years, uneven months and moon phases – without manual correction until the year 2100.
The Calibre 1120 QP: Thin, Complex, and Impeccably Finished
Inside the new models beats the calibre 1120 QP, a movement that manages to be both delicate and determined. With 276 components and a thickness of just 4.05 mm, it is a masterclass in ultra-thin engineering. The movement is self-winding, yet still reveals its ornate finishing through the sapphire caseback: the bevelled bridges, the polished screw sinks, the open-worked 22K gold rotor shaped like the Maltese cross.
Even the surfaces hidden beneath the dial are decorated. It’s an approach that says everything about Vacheron Constantin’s philosophy – what the wearer doesn’t see still matters.
According to Sandrine Donguy, the brand’s Product & Innovation Director, the decision to revive a smaller case size speaks to a broader cultural shift. “People are rediscovering refined proportions – pieces with presence and comfort,” she notes. The new diameter happens to be just half a millimetre larger than the watch that inspired it: the 1983 Reference 43031, a perpetual calendar released during the height of the quartz crisis.
That earlier model proved that complicated mechanical watchmaking could still thrive, even as the industry’s foundations shook. Its influence on the new design is unmistakable: the balanced dial layout, the uncluttered display, the sense of restraint.
Three Variations, Distinct Characters
18K 5N Pink Gold
Warm, cohesive, and confident. The hands and markers mirror the case metal, while the deep blue moon-phase and matching strap give the watch a sense of depth.
18K White Gold
This version plays with contrasts – white gold for the case, pink gold for the hands and markers, and a light brown strap that feels understated but contemporary.
Diamond-Set 18K White Gold
A sparkle-forward interpretation, but kept under control. Diamonds are set on the bezel, lugs and crown, adding brilliance without tipping into excess. The deep blue strap grounds the design, keeping it composed.
All three references bear the Hallmark of Geneva and, for models produced in 2025, a special 270th anniversary emblem marking the Maison’s long-standing independence and craft.
