A 1,000-mile road trip from Dubai to Riyadh
The Taycan is set to be a big deal for Porsche. Its first all-electric model, with an experience said to be on par with the 911 Turbo, the company fully expects this to become its top seller.
Time for some more publicity to get the word out, then. And what better, in the Middle East, than to get former F1 driver and current Porsche ambassador Mark Webber to drive a Taycan on a 1,000-mile road trip, from Dubai to Riyadh? He was accompanied on his trip by Saudi Arabian motorsport personality, Aseel Al Hamad.
Dubbed the ‘Soul Journey’ by Porsche, this was an opportunity to highlight the credentials of the new Taycan, with the drive taking place over five days at the end of November. As this represents the brand’s future, cars from its long history and motorsport heritage made appearances along the way.
The conclusion of the trip in Riyadh coincided with the FIA Formula E Championship season opening race, which takes place in the city, and this year saw Porsche making its debut in the sport. Although it didn’t win, the team said it was a good experience from which to build upon.
The Taycan Turbo and Turbo S will be available in the region in 2020. The Turbo S accelerates from 0-100km/h in 2.8 seconds, while the Taycan Turbo does so in 3.2 seconds. The Turbo S has a range of up to 412km, and the Turbo up to 450km. The top speed of both all-wheel-drive models is 260km/h.
