Paul Smith Presents Clothing Featuring Work By Christoph Niemann

The award-winning German artist

For Paul Smith, 2020 marks 50 years since he first started his clothing company. The business, founded in 1970, shares the year of its birth with Berlin-based designer Christoph Niemann – a coincidence, or one of the ways that Smith has chosen to celebrate?

Niemann is described as an illustrator, graphic designer and children’s book author. His award-winning work has graced the covers of The New Yorker and The New York Times Magazine.

Last year, Niemann revealed a video art piece, Traffic Pong, depicting a game of Pong superimposed over traffic aerial footage, with the movement of the cars influencing the direction of the ball. If you want to know more, look to the Netflix series, Abstract: The Art of Design, with its first episode all about Niemann’s work.

All of this establishes him as a very creative individual, so what happens when he’s tasked with providing illustrations for selected Paul Smith clothing? The answer can be found in Smith’s spring-summer collection, with images themed around travel, art and creativity.

Smith and Niemann’s shared approach to design is the foundation of this collaboration. Both have an irreverent, good-humoured style, and delight in surprising their audience, producing work that remains relatable and rooted in the real world.

Find the Paul Smith x Christoph Niemann collection at Paul Smith stores in Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates. It’s also available online.
