Based on the rivalry at the 1966 Le Mans 24 Hour race
There was a lot going on in 1966. England won the FIFA World Cup; the Russians launched the first spacecraft to orbit the Earth; and the Batman TV show starring Adam West made its debut. If you were a fan of motorsport, it seemed that nothing couple topple the dominance of Ferrari – until Ford built a revolutionary race car to take it on at the Le Mans 24 Hour race.
And here to tell that story is Matt Damon and Christian Bale, starring in Ford v Ferrari, set for release in November. Watch the first trailer here:
The movie follows an eccentric, determined team of American engineers, led by Carroll Shelby (Damon) and his British-born driver, Ken Miles (Bale), who are tasked by Ford to create from scratch the GT40 – the car that could beat Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans 24 Hour race in France. A tricky challenge, thwarted by corporate interference, the laws of physics and the men’s own personal demons.
Ford v Ferrari is directed by James Mangold, who has Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line and acclaimed superhero flick Logan among his credits. To promote the movie, Damon and Bale served as the honorary starters for the Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway recently.
