Varoin Marwah returned to season nine of Fashion Forward with a new lease on life. The menswear designer’s brand offers a bespoke tailoring service in addition to eclectic ready-to-wear lines and seems to have taken a new direction – one that will undoubtedly appeal to the modern consumer.
The usual vibrant embroidery and colour palette was replaced with something far more interesting; A sophisticated exploration of menswear through contemporary tailoring and upbeat design. Skinny trousers were paired with pinstriped jackets and double-breasted coats trimmed with shearling, which painted a picture of decadent minimalism. The designer’s traditional knack for embroidery was subdued with shades of black that tinged the collection with an air of mystery, while some models bore painted faces that mimicked the shape of a heart.
A message of peace in this time of political upheaval could have been the driving force behind the face paint but the real takeaway from the collection was Mahwah’s evolution as a designer, which was best exemplified by the closing look, a jet-black evening jacket embroidered with trellis patterned beads in the same colour; striking yet elegant.
