How Beverly Hills 90210 dressed the 1990s

A brief look back at the styles the men wore on the teen series that ran from 1990 until 2000. It’s easy to forget how big this was in the early years, and just how influential it was in terms of styles. Of course, like all series of this type it got worse as it went on and was largely ignored towards the end, but for a while there in the early 1990s this was a really big deal.

Steve Sanders with the polo-shirt-under-jacket look that he persisted with throughout the series. Brandon’s jean jacket with leather embellishments and David wearing a jacket that couldn’t be more Los Angeles early ‘90s. So baggy, that colour, everything.

It’s all about Brandon’s tie. Grey with the red, white and black flecks, this was also the pattern for one of the most popular duvet covers in the ‘80s.

Steve with the tucked-in-polo, high trousers and jacket effort that makes him look like the rich daddy’s boy antagonist from many ‘80s films. He dragged it into the ‘90s and really went with it.

Even by season four, Dylan was still rocking the double denim look, but with rolled up sleeves. That’s how you knew he was a rebel.

Season one Brandon in stonewashed jeans and a bright waistcoat. This actually looks like the VHS cover from a teen rom com.

The guys looking like a bad, country club version of Goodfellas. David pulling off the “invisible tie” look is actually on point for this season, which seems a bit disconcerting. Perhaps this whole picture is a portent of things to come.

The gang. Brandon’s look pretty much encapsulates the whole James Dean revival thing that was going on in the early ‘90s, from aftershave adverts to primetime TV.

Jumping forward to season five here and this is bad boy David with THREE earings and a waistcoat and white T-shirt look that suggests failed audition for one of Lou Pearlman’s boybands. Probably a lucky escape.
