Consider product labels and ingredients: This depends on the skin-type. For acne-prone skin, look for cleansers and moisturisers that are oil-free or non-comedogenic. For sensitive skin, look for mild, fragrance-free products, as those containing fragrances can irritate the skin and leave it dry. However, beware of products labelled unscented as many of them contain masking fragrances that can still cause skin irritation.
Wash your face daily, and after exercise: Regular bar soap often contains ingredients that can dry out the skin. Therefore, select mild facial cleansers and wash your face with lukewarm water.
Watch your shaving technique: Wet your skin and hair before shaving to help soften it. Use moisturising shaving cream and shave in the direction of hair growth, and rinse after each swipe of the razor. Multi-blade razors can work well for some men, however, if you experience razor bumps, burns, or ingrown hair, switch to a single, or double-blade razor instead, and remember not to stretch your skin while shaving. Remember to change your blade after five to seven shaves to minimise irritation.
Moisturise daily: Moisturiser works by trapping water in your skin, which can help reduce fine lines and make your skin look brighter and younger. For the best results, apply moisturiser to your face and body immediately after a bath, shower or shaving while the skin is still damp.
Check your skin regularly: If you notice new spots, or moles that itch, bleed or change colour, these could be early warning signs of skin cancer. Men over 50 are at a higher risk of developing Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, than the general population. However, if caught early skin cancer is highly treatable. Be sure to spare a quick minute checking regularly, and make an appointment with your dermatologist if you have the slightest suspicion.
Wear sunscreen whenever outdoors: This is a crucial step to prevent sun damage, and only takes a minute. Select a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, preferably one that’s easy to carry with you, and reapply after every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating. Be sure to apply this on all exposed areas of the skin, including your scalp, ears, neck and lips.
